Totally agree! When I became a parent, I knew my evenings and weekends would be spent with the tiny human. I ended up deciding to find a way to leave my full-time job so that I could build a more flexible arrangement and "hustle" when my tiny human is in daycare - instead of trying to find time around her. It is nice to hear more people talking about the downside of hustle culture and to remind myself that I shouldn't feel guilty for not working more.
Ah this article is so spot on. As a mum of 2 with a full time job + working on a side passion project, I am often torn between working on my side project in the evenings and / or weekends or spending time with the family. I am extremely conscious of burnout too.
"Operating like a startup can also mean being lean and scrappy, and being very intentional about what you're building on limited resources. One of those limited resources might be the number of hours you have to put towards the startup." ------ This is such an important point. Although I love working and am happy to be burning the candle at both ends if I'm working on something I love, however especially with 2 kids and a full time job it is unsustainable.
I'm still trying to get the balance right by blocking off times and being super intentional with the 'free' time I have and I try really hard to not let it eat into the time I want to have with my small kids and husband, and even for myself.
Having said that, something has to go, so in my case it is my social outings. I get some social banter in my gym classes, but otherwise I have really narrowed this down to important social occassions only.
Oh well!
Love what you are doing with Startup Parent, Sarah! Thank you and hope to be more connected.
This is a great riff. Thanks Sarah.
